Enjoying a cup of tea has become a culture in various parts of the world.

Not only does it relieve thirst, a cup of warm tea can also soothe the sinuses when you have a cold.

Quoted from Men’s Journal, a new study published in the European Journal of Preventive Cardiology found that drinking tea at least three times a week was associated with a longer life and a significantly reduced risk of cardiovascular problems such as heart attack and stroke.

The study analyzed 100,902 participants in the China-PAR project, a comprehensive health assessment in China.

Participants were differentiated based on their tea drinking (including green and black tea varieties).

The researchers conducted the study for an average of 7.3 years to assess the health of the respondents over time.

Regular drinkers showed a 20 percent lower risk of heart disease and stroke, and a 22 percent lower risk of fatal heart disease and stroke.

In addition, they also showed a 15 percent lower risk of all-cause death.

The data showed that people over the age of 50 who drank tea regularly would develop symptoms of heart disease and stroke 1.41 years later and live 1.26 years longer than their non-tea drinkers.

Those who have a lifelong habit of drinking tea have strong health.

Years of tea drinking showed a 56 percent lower risk of heart disease and stroke, and a 29 percent lower risk of all-cause mortality compared to those who did not drink the beverage, or drank it sporadically.

Interestingly, the researchers did not see any health benefits among those who started drinking tea during the study period.

And the researchers noted that the strongest health benefits were in green tea.

The reason may have to do with the active compounds in tea that promote heart health.

They are called polyphenols, and are a class of natural compounds that help give plants their color and taste.

For humans, polyphenols are a major micronutrient and source of antioxidants.

Researchers theorize that due to the way black tea leaves are processed, the polyphenols may be less potent.

According to Dongfeng Gu, a senior author of the study, evidence suggests that polyphenols do not last long in the body after ingestion.

“Thus, frequent intake of tea over a long period of time may be necessary for its cardioprotective effects,” he said in a press release from the European Society of Cardiology.

Besides being delicious, drinking tea is also beneficial for health.
