JAKARTA – The legs of the vehicle need extra attention, especially for those of you who often take your vehicle out of town or often cross steep terrain.

The problem with the legs of the vehicle that often arises is the motion of the wheels that are not aligned. If left unchecked will affect the suspension and tire performance.

Hariadi, Asst. to Service Dept. Head of PT Suzuki Indomobil Sales (SIS) said vehicle owners need to

perform regular wheel alignment checks and adjustments to ensure that the wheel conditions are aligned and balanced between camber, caster, toe, and kingpin inclination.

According to Hariadi, regular wheel alignment is useful to ensure the stability of the vehicle’s suspension so that it works well and makes the wheels last longer.

When checking wheel alignment, it is necessary to pay attention to the Camber, Caster, Toe, and Kingpin Inclination to ensure that the tire angle can be installed properly.

Because, it can affect the way the tires come into contact with the road. The following is an understanding of Camber, Caster, Toe, and Kingpin Inclination.

1. Camber

Camber is the level of tilt of the wheel at the top when viewed from a vertical angle. This check is to make sure the tire angle is not tilted inwards or outwards.

If the camber is not aligned/aligned, damage to worn bearings, wheel suspension, or joint joints may be affected.

Camber has 2 types of angles, namely positive and negative.

For positive, the top has an outward slope. This aims to balance the lower tires that are pressed outward when loaded and the load on the steering is reduced.

While negative, the top has an inward slope which serves to make the vehicle stable and straight.

Negative camber is usually used for cars that have low or flat ground clearance or racing cars that require high stability when turning sharply at high speed.

2. Caster

Caster is the angle of the line of symmetry of the kingpin and the vertical line in the plane. This angle serves to balance the steering, provide stability, and balance the vehicle when on the road cornering.

The caster is set so that the angle remains in the middle, so that the steering axis remains straight and balanced, because if it is not balanced then the car will only point to one side.

Caster consists of two types, namely positive and negative. Positive caster is the position when the top of the wheel points to the rear of the vehicle. This positive caster makes the starting center point of the tire tangent to the road behind the point of intersection of the kingpin axis.

While the negative caster, the position when the top of the wheel is pointing to the front of the vehicle.

There is also a zero caster, which is when the line of symmetry on the kingpin or pedestal is parallel to a flat vertical line.

The advantage of the caster itself is for the steering wheel to return straight when the driver turns the vehicle.

3. Toe

The toe is an angle that turns inwards or outwards when viewed from above using the measuring instrument used.

If an error occurs, it can accelerate wheel wear. Unlike the caster and camber, the toe is measured in inches.

Toe itself is divided into 2 types, namely toe in and toe out. This check is to ensure that the tire angle does not turn too much in or out or needs to be adjusted.

If the distance between the right and left wheels is appropriate, and the rear is appropriate, then the speed of the car will be balanced and can run straight.

4. Kingpin Inclination

Kingpin Inclination is the angle to the vertical line and can be seen from the front of the vehicle, or also called Steering Axis Inclination which can cause a smaller offset distance.

This check serves to determine the stability of the steering wheel when rolling around the kingpin. When the vehicle stops, the force becomes less to turn the steering wheel.

Then this check can also create a stronger self-centering effect, allowing the front wheel that was turned while passing the corner to return straight ahead.

“The importance of checking wheel alignment or spooring is to avoid the condition of the car being unbalanced or not running straight and it is very important to do it at least every six months,” said Hariadi.

If the car is hit by a collision, often passes through potholes, the steering feels heavy, unstable, the wheels don’t return properly, and the tires wear out quickly, he advises Suzuki vehicle owners to take them to an authorized repair shop.

The car will be handled by experienced technicians to keep the car in stable condition when it is being used for short or long distance trips.
